Did you know my IKEA has a green roof? Well, it's not really my IKEA, but occasionally, my trips are frequent enough for my husband to poke fun at me and say that I have a permanent parking spot there with my name on it.
Back to the green roof, IKEA in Stoughton, MA, has a roof with 37,000 square feet of low-maintenance ground cover plants, mostly sedum. This permanent roof top planting system, with live plants, reduce air pollution, green house gas emissions and improves storm water management. Further, green roofs also help reduce heating and cooling costs.
This store was the first IKEA retail outlet to become LEED certified in the U.S. This basically means that it has met a set of standards for environmentally sustainable construction, design and operation.
Pretty with a purpose.
