I went to Idylwilde (see Favorite Grocery store post from April 2) today to pick up a few groceries and to just browse the plants and flowers, when I came upon this display:
Got shade? Grow a moss garden with a Moss Milkshake.
For $19.95 + tax, you can cover about 20 square feet in moss. Fairly simple instructions, you open the box, poor water in it, stir it, and then poor it on where ever you want your moss. The instructions tell you that the moss should to be in the shade, and you can spread the paste over any firm surface as wood, soil, stone or concrete. Sounds like a lot of fun, but really expensive.
I decided to look online for some moss growing tips, and I found several recipes for making your own shake in your kitchen blender.
Basically, in a blender, mix a hand full of moss, 2 cups of buttermilk, and 2 cups of water to a thin milkshake consistency. Done!
Now I'm thinking about the shaded areas in my garden wondering what I could do. Right now I'm thinking about moss:ing a collection of rocks.
For some mossy inspiration, check out blogger Heavy Petal and her moss graffiti.
When I got back from the store, I was happy to see that my creeping phlox had started to bloom.
