The love of trees

"I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines."
Henry David Thoreau

Not that I would walk eight or ten miles for a tree, but I hear what Thoreau was saying. Every once in a while I walk up to my favorite tree, a river birch, in our yard just to be close to it, to touch it and look at it and admire it.

I'm very fond of this tree. The pyramidal shape, the constantly changing bark with its paper thin layers revealing colors of rust and salmon, and its delicate foliage on the long limber branches that sways so beautifully in the wind, all of it I love. Does this sound a bit corny to you? I'm taking a bit of a risk here declaring my love for a tree, but I know there are more people out there with strong affections for trees.

Take Enzo Enea for example, the Swiss landscape architect and tree collector that just this week opened a tree museum.

It's a 2.5 acre park near Lake Zurich in Switzerland where Mr. Enea shows his appreciation for trees. The museum promises that at any given time, there will be approximately 120 trees on view.

Wouldn't that be something to visit?

Härlig känsla i din beskrivning!

    Maria

  8. I guess I didn't love trees enough to stay in New England! but, actually I do love trees individually and in smaller groups. My favorite tree in Salt Lake was a red Japanese maple growing in our front yard. I also loved the white weeping birch trees in my parents yard. My favorite tree in MA was "Grace's tree" which was an oak tree (I think) that grew outside her window of her bedroom. She cried when she had to leave it. My favorite tree in NM? I only have ONE tree in my yard! I have no idea what it is, but its leaves did not bud until late in May after the spring winds had died down. I think it is a very smart tree for doing that, so it is my favorite too.

  12. Tina- Thank you!
Sophia- Jisses vad mycket träd du har planterat. Vilken stor trädgård du måste ha. Vad kul!
    Liza- Welcome, and thank you!
Kathysue-Thank you too for the comments, and welcome!
Michelle my friend- Hard to pick a favorite. You sound like Thoreau with old acquaintances. But I know what you're saying. I have many more favorites. A weeping birch would totally rock my world.

  13. What a great idea. I love trees too. Aspen are my favorite, but I'm also a sucker for maples, oaks, firs . . . Have a great day!

  14. Leslie-Wishing it was just a tad closer though, right?
A Write Life- Oooh, Aspens, got to tell you, I love those too. Especially the way their leaves flutter in the wind. You know, the sound...
    Have a great one too.
