And I think of myself as a gardener...

The first of the season. Fresh radishes, straight from the soil.... of my friend's garden. She brought them for me the other day. I really wish I could say they are mine. But I can't. The cool season crops are being harvested. And I have nothing to show. My seed envelopes are still in the desk drawer. Not growing too well there, I'll tell ya.

I had the best of intentions. Lettuce, arugula, carrots, radishes, the works. The spring had just started - there was plenty of time. Besides, my allergies have been bad, the black flies wouldn't let me step outside the house without attacking me, and... what else? I was waiting for the right moment.

I should learn from this - my whole life can go by while I wait for the right moment. But I don't think I'll learn anything, this has happened before. I'm a daydreamer and procrastinator.
Good thing I have nice friends who are willing to share their crops.

By the way, the radishes were the best I've ever had, and, I even tasted (after making sure they're not poisonous) the leaves. Reminded me a little of arugula, but grassier. Do you guys eat the leaves, or greens, of any of your crops?

  1. Yes, it's a bit frustrating when you miss the right time to get things growing. Gardening really is about patience :)
I don't eat my leaves, unless that's the bit I'm growing, though my baby beetroot leaves are apparently edible. Have a nice weekend!

  5. I know Annelie - good lesson. If you wait for the right moment, it might pass you by. I've been feeling that way a lot lately - that if there's something that I think would be a good idea to do, I should just do it right now. Although, I hear you on the black flies. Oh, how I don't miss those!!!

  6. Don't feel bad, I got a head start and I still feel behind. Some of those cool crops will still do OK during the summer if you give them shade. Plus, you could still put them in later for a fall crop.

I tried my beet greens. I think I will stick to spinach. Arugula rocks! Even though it irritates the lining of my mouth and throat a bit (I'm very sensitive to many chemicals that don't bother other people) I still eat it because it tastes so good!

  10. Sarah - I learned that beet roots were edible last summer. Who'd thought. We underuse our crops.
Sophia - du har rätt. Jag skulle kunna så lite nu faktist.
Ruben- jag tog fram fröpåsarna idag.
Leslie-my kids are begging to do pumpkin. Is it too late?
Michelle my friend, the dragon flies are out. Soon the last black fly will be mere a memory.
Sylvana- thanks for the tip about more shade. Yes, arugula rocks.
Inspererande.

  11. Wow, my radishes are famous! I'm so glad you enjoyed them! The pictures are great! You know that I'm usually not that on top of things, but this year the weather was so warm and all of the snow was gone early from our backyard, so we were able to get a jump on our seed sowing. This weekend is supposed to be perfect for planting tomato and pepper plants, but I have bought neither. Maybe next week...

  12. Famous radishes that are long gone. Ate them the same day. Delish, Suzanne. Thank you again for sharing. Had to put a picture of the leaves up as well, you don't get them that nice from the store.

Tomatoes are next on my agenda as well. Heading down to Russell's this week.

  13. Hey! Quick question that's totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I'm trying to find a template
or plugin that might be able to correct this problem.
If you have any recommendations, please share.
    Thank you!
